Marble Falls track aims for better finishes at own meet
The Marble Falls High School track and field teams host their annual meet Thursday, March 1, at Mustang Stadium.
The field events begin at 12:30 p.m. with the running events starting at 2:30 p.m.
“Going from our first to second meet, all you can ask for is incremental progress,” head coach Austin Silva said. “They will be a little more composed, a little less nervous and execute better resulting in better finishes. I look forward to watching them perform Thursday.”
Marble Falls competed at the Gatesville meet Feb. 23.
Freshman Madison Cuplin brought home silver medals from the long jump and the triple jump and joined the 400-meter relay team with Nashla Crott, Amaris Mitchell and Ava Carter where the Lady Mustangs captured the gold medal.
For these Lady Mustangs, the finishes confirmed what they believed for a good while, Silva said.
“Our girls and I both knew they would have a chance to be pretty good this year,” he said. “Knowing that, they have pretty high expectations for themselves. It’s something we’ve been talking about since December. So to see them go out and actually get gold in the first meet of the season and do what they said they would is awesome to watch as a coach. I am excited to watch them progress this year.”
The jumper who took first in the long and triple jumps is Cameron Yoe senior Yierra Flemings. Cuplin joins the Marble Falls varsity the summer after she won a gold medal in the triple jump of the girls 14-and-under division at the Amateur Athletic Union’s Junior Olympics last summer.
“Maddie took second in both long and triple only to a senior from Cameron who is an eight-time state champion,” Silva said. “But to see her compete and have the success that she is having at the highest level as a freshman is pretty remarkable and not something that should be taken for granted.”
As for the rest of his athletes, Silva said he believes they will perform well in their own meet where they practice and call home.
“This being our first meet of the season, nerves got to a lot of our kids resulting in some uncharacteristic mistakes. But I am confident our kids will learn from it, settle down and execute better moving forward.”
